The increasingly data-intensive nature of science has led researchers and funding agencies to promote the worldwide sharing and integration of data. Many data sharing initiatives now exist and have greatly advanced our fundamental understanding of human genetics, neuroscience, and physiology. The sharing of human anatomical data carries similar potential to revolutionize digital human modelling. The Parametric Human Project (PHP) is an academic and industrial research consortium that was founded to advance our knowledge of human anatomical variation and the state-of-the-art for digital human models. The goal is to create a statistically-based digital atlas and parametric model of the human anatomy that accounts for human variation, and can be morphed to represent the anatomy of any specific individual. Success depends on the establishment of a strong infrastructure that will facilitate the collection, sharing, and aggregation of human anatomical data from numerous sources.
