An important challenge in bringing a new drug to market is determining how a drug is metabolised and if any of the resulting metabolites are toxic. Glucuronylation is a major pathway of drug metabolism. Glucuronic acid residues can be added to alcohols, phenols, amines and carboxylic acids to yield a more soluble drug metabolite that can be eliminated. To determine the toxicity of these metabolites requires adequate amounts of each compound for analysis. Acanthus Research is a custom synthesis company that is often approached to prepare glucuronylated drug metabolites.
