The world's elderly population is drastically increasing and will hit the two billion mark by 2050 as forecasted by the United Nations. With an aging population, healthcare systems across the Western world are in potential crisis. The objective of our collaborative research in smart care is to develop and integrate intelligent robotic systems in communities to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Healthcare robots provide an advanced technology that will enable the elderly to live independently at home longer. Not only will robots help relieve the economic strain on healthcare systems but, more important, they will allow for the use of technology to provide person-centred care to the vulnerable elderly population.
