The Freeze Dryer (Labconco Freezone Plus 2.5 L Cascade) is very effective in drying, concentration and evaporation of various samples (milk, urea, anti-cancer drug, antibiotics, nutratceuticals, fish samples, plant samples, fungi and bacteria), evaporation of various solvents, peptide extraction, drying of various polymers and nanoparticles. The requested Freeze Dryer is crucial for the research groups of Dr. Ghaly, Dr. Brooks, Dr. Budge, Dr. Ghanem, Dr. Gill and Dr. Truelstrup Hansen. It will be also used by Dr. Al Taweel, Dr. Mazzanti and Dr. Yildiz. The currently available unit on which the groups relied upon to prepare concentrates for experiments on fractionation and bio-assays for years is a second-hand (20 years old) obsolete freeze dryer. The pump on this old freeze dryer is also second hand (30 years old) and as such requires constant attention and expensive repair and maintenance. The vacuum produced is inadequate for our drying requirements. Thus, the proposed equipment is essential for the current and future research projects on drying blueberries, haskap berries, fish and fish processing waste samples, various nanoparticles, bacteria and fungi and separation and extraction of various nutraceuticals (fish oil, omega-3 fatty acids, proteins, aminoacids) and pharmaceuticals. (bioactive peptides (T2D), jadomycin, chymotrypsin, pepsin, collagenase, enzyme inhibitors: alpha-1 antiproteinase, alpha-2 macroglobulin, anticoagulants: heparin and heparin-like glycosaminoglycans). It is impossible to carry out the separation of chylomicrons from the other lipoproteins in fish blood (for measuring the stable carbon isotopes of specific fatty acids) without freeze dryer. The requested freeze dryer is needed in order to separate/extract and purify the nanoparticles formulated from the natural biopolymer chitosan and antibiotics (jadomycin) from bacteria cells. This equipment will be utilized for training of 52 HQP (7 undergraduate students, 33 graduate students, 2 PDF and 10 technicians).
