Eye tracking with mobile participants

Eye tracking, a method used to record and measure eye movements, is one of the most valued tools for studying perceptual and cognitive processes. It has the advantage of well-developed techniques and of being a measure of real-time, online behaviour of current processing. Four research laboratories are jointly submitting this application. All have experience with eye tracking for different uses. We have used eye tracking to determine what visual information is important for speech comprehension and what information supports audiovisual perception. In addition, we have pursued other studies of visual scene perception such as the perception of visual arts and natural scenes. We have studied basic visual perception of motion and static surfaces. In all of this work, however, our studies have been constrained by artificial conditions required to collect data in the eye-tracking systems we currently have in our laboratories. The stimuli had to be presented in 2D displays (computer monitors) and the participants were severely restricted in their perceptual activity. They were required to maintain 'static' head position and therefore to refrain from natural movements during conversation and visual search. In this application, we request funds for a novel eye tracking system that permits subjects to move and for high-quality data to be collected in more naturalistic paradigms.
