InteraXon has developed a sleek, portable EEG headset, the "Muse", for consumer applications. They have approached Becker and her graduate student to help implement state-of-the-art signal processing and machine learning methodologies that will lead to the development of more advanced brain-computer interfacing (BCI) consumer applications using the Muse. InteraXon is the primary Canadian company in the area of Brain-Computer Interfacing. By advancing their signal processing techniques and the neural basis for their technologies and applications, InteraXon can become a world leader in this new and upcoming field. In particular, InteraXon is interested in being the first company to implement a BCI using EEG microstates. EEG microstates are signals that reflect stable and synchronous activity in large, globally distributed brain networks and are thought to be the basic, atomic elements of thoughts and consciousness. The major aim of this research project is to develop a method for processing EEG and extracting microstates that provides an accurate and reliable means of identifying them in real time. At the end of the project, software for detecting, classifying and relating EEG microstates to mental activity and states of the user, to be used in a Brain-Computer Interface for a wide variety of applications, as well as a technical report, will be delivered to the company. Our project aligns perfectly with InteraXon's goal to develop applications that promote health, well-being and self-awareness, uniquely positioning the company in the Brain-Computer Interface market. These applications will be greatly beneficial to the Canadian population. Additionally, this work will help InteraXon become the primary world leader in BCI technologies and applications, making Canada the world leader in this revolutionary new and upcoming branch of technologies.
