Biological control of insect pests in British Columbia agriculture

Equipment provided by this NSERC program will enhance and accelerate research on the use of biological control products for management of insect pests in the British Columbia (BC) agricultural sector. Several companies in BC produce arthropod predators and parasitoids as products for biological control of pests. These products provide a sustainable ecologically-based method of pest management for BC's agricultural producers. In this project, we will conduct research on new products and processes for biological control and on organisms that threaten the efficacy of biological control products. In addition, we will develop tools for the identification and monitoring of agricultural pests particularly when biological control products are being used in new crop environments. Our collaboration with biological control and agricultural producers should yield products and processes that enhance sales and markets for biological control products along with reducing the environmental impacts of pest management activities.
