Improving hoist planning for tall buildings

The industry partner identified the need for advances and innovative technologies to improve hoist planning for the construction of tall buildings (more than 40 stories) and development of strategies that improve hoisting productivity. Construction hoists are manually-operated, enclosed elevator cages that travel vertically on truss towers to move personnel and small cargo safely to upper floors. The objective of this research is to develop models for hoist planning and innovative hoisting strategies tailored to the company's project management practices and provide strategies to improve hoist productivity. This will be achieved through the development of simulation models that allow various strategies to be tested and compared using stochastic variables that represent risk factors. Data resulting from multiple simulation runs will then be used to develop analytical models, likely in the form of regression equations, charts, and tables, which can be readily used and applied to compare hoist planning strategies and their resulting productivity and costs.
