This proposal presents a collaborative project aimed at facilitating the widespread use of leading edge technological advancements and productivity improvements for the local construction industry in two specific areas, namely, e-permitting automation and BIM-based on-site visualization and collaboration technologies. These two research themes have been strategically selected to extend the benefits of building information modelling (BIM) beyond the design stage and into the permitting and construction processes. The partnership between University of Toronto's Building Tall Research Centre, RESCON, Qoo Studio, and NSERC are integral to advancing this effort.
The overarching vision of this proposal is to improve the productivity of the construction industry using BIM-driven technologies. In collaboration with our industry partners and members of the Toronto BIM Community (tBIMc), two objectives are identified. The first is to develop a BIM-based e-permitting framework that provides opportunity to automate standard code-compliance checking activities. These activities can be used by designers prior to submission or during the permitting processes by the regional authority. The second objective is to develop a framework for the implementation of on-site visualization and collaboration tools on a BIM platform. The framework will be based on the evaluation of the effectiveness of technology implementation in terms of increased productivity of trades, improved site co-ordination, reduced rework, automated inspections, and enhanced construction quality control.
