Shift work is increasingly common and has become a necessity to mining operations as the owners strive to maximize production and compete in global markets. The remote locations of the mines in Canada and their transient workforce are other factors responsible for the increase in the adoption of shift work. Despite this increase, there is conflicting evidence as to the effect of various short and long term shift strategies on worker performance and on overall operational efficiency. The proposed research will use site-specific data from Canadian mining operations of our industrial partner to evaluate the impact of different shift strategies on the performance of specific tasks in various areas of its mining operations.
