The proposed project addresses the adhesion and delamination properties of NanoCrystalline Cellulose films. CelluForce is a Canadian Company focusing on the commercial development of the NanoCrystalline Cellulose (NCC). NCC is an innovative forest product, which is a major contributor to the development of the green economy. One of the current applications uses a suspension of NCC to coat plastic packaging films to improve printability and barrier properties. The challenge for this application is the premature delamination or failure of NCC coatings at high humidity conditions. To overcome this problem, CelluForce has teamed up with Dr. Boxin Zhao's laboratory at the University of Waterloo. The project targets the investigation of mechanical and adhesion properties of NCC films at low and high relative humidity. It will enable CelluForce to generate new understanding of NCC and may improve their coating performance and enable new products. This development will foster a vital competitive edge for the Canadian forest industry in the international market place.
