The effective adhesion and/or joining of similar and dissimilar material components is one of the most critical technical prerequisites for manufacturing biosensors, medical devices, microelectronics and many other technologies. Inspired by superior marine adhesives in such biological organisms as zebra mussels, barnacle and castle worms, we have invented a unique synthetic underwater adhesives or superglue, which can work effectively in wet or underwater conditions. Based on the full patent application filed on November 27th, 2012, we propose to advance this technology and turn it into an innovative product. The project will focus on the market assessment for this technology and identify technical hurdles of the current invention and fabricating a market-ready prototype to promote the technology and attract early stage investments. We expect the developed technology will expand or invade the existing markets for aquarium superglues and medical sealants (as the key components of our adhesive are natural), and may have a niche market for bonding materials in fully hydrated environments. In addition, the technology may also be marketed as a coating for its anti-fouling, anti-bacterial, and biochemical properties.
