英文摘要
Wastewater is inevitable in every community in Canada; however, disposal and treatment of wastewater is not necessarily consistent in every community. Organic material and nutrients, in wastewater, such as nitrogen and phosphorus have potentially significant adverse impacts on receiving water bodies, and can affect fish populations, increase algae growth, and cause eutrophication. In order to facilitate improvements in aquatic ecosystems the federal government recently produced the wastewater systems effluent regulations (WSER) which mandate a minimum secondary level wastewater treatment of effluent unionized ammonia (NH3). Ammonia is a known deleterious substance in aquatic ecosystems which results in both acute and chronic toxicity issues, including fish death. However, low temperatures impede performance. Bishop Water Technologies Inc has an attached growth system, BioCordTM that has the potential to efficiently treat processes for ammonia removal however research investigating the impact of lower temperatures is limited. Furthermore, membrane bioreactors and attached growth systems have the potential to provide efficient treatment of secondary wastewater and nutrient removal of nitrogen and phosphorus under varying climate conditions.
