Wastewater has the potential to result in eutrophication of receiving waters which include streams, rivers and lakes. Nutrients that may be present in the wastewater effluent such as nitrogen and phosphorus have potentially significant adverse impacts on receiving water bodies, and can affect fish populations, increase algae growth, and decrease overall water quality. The federal government has produced the wastewater systems effluent regulations (WSER) In order to facilitate improvements in aquatic ecosystems which require a minimum level of wastewater treatment for effluent unionized ammonia (NH3). However, low wastewater temperatures associated with the Canadian climate can impede performance therefore it is necessary to
