This research program involves the investigations of the chemistry and potential applications of cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]), a family of host molecules, which display remarkably strong and selective binding to a variety of guest molecules in water, using the hydrophobic property of the host's cavity and non-covalent ion-dipole and dipole-dipole interactions at the polar and restrictive portals to the cavity. Molecular recognition of guest molecules by host molecules in aqueous solution, an important feature of numerous substrate-enzyme interactions in Nature, will be of increasing future interest in areas such as Green Chemistry, drug design, and drug delivery.
