Articular cartilage is a soft tissue lining the ends of bones in articulating joints such as the knee. This tissue is maintained by cells called chondrocytes. Cartilage is charged and hydrated and thus the compression and relaxation of this tissue during normal movement results in complex alterations in the environment immediately surrounding the chondrocytes. For example, cartilage compression results in a loss of fluid out of the tissue and a concentration of the large 'bottle brush' molecules (proteoglycans) that hold negative charges in
