The proposed collaborative research and development project, between the University of Waterloo and ArcelorMittal Dofasco Inc., aims for a detailed understanding of the martensite tempering process with correlation to the softening phenomenon in dual phase steels that occurs in various welding processes used in automotive industries. The understanding of the softening phenomenon will be linked to joint performance by hardness measurements of the martensitic steel welds and base metal. The study will enhance the fundamental understanding of an important issue i.e. heat affected zone softening, which hampers the employment of dual phase steels in manufacturing industries. The results of this project will be an asset increasing the adoption of dual phase steels by the automotive manufacturers in Canada.
