Hard rocks were and they still are a big challenge for most of both civil and mining projects, such as tunneling and underground excavations. The assistance of microwave energy on a conventional mechanical rock breakage system, as a novel technique, will be extensively investigated. Microwave energy exposure will act as an induced energy in order to heat up the rock and creating thermal cracks at grain boundary as well as some of the rock grains. This mechanism will cause the preconditioning the rock, in other word weakening, so it can be broken with lesser energy derived from conventional mechanical equipment. This phenomenon will have potential for efficient, performance and possible economic impact on selected hard rock breakage.
