Connected Vehicle (CV) technology is the next major development in the transportation industry. CV technology facilitates an environment in which vehicles communicate with other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure via wireless networks, greatly improving both safety and efficiency for not only the management agencies that design and operate the transportation network, but also for the drivers who use it. While some research is underway to prepare for the inevitable shift to CV technology, one significant area of study lacks attention: the unique challenges that CV technology, and its accompanying applications, poses to drivers. Therefore, the proposed study will investigate these challenges, especially those related to commercial vehicles and drivers. In an effort to improve network performance for both commercial vehicles and general traffic, the proposed research will analyze three key areas: 1) commercial-driver readiness to accept the CV technology implementation and applications, which may conflict with existing driving behaviours; 2) the algorithms to provide real-time advisory driving speeds through On-Board Equipment (OBE) in commercial vehicles; 3) the impacts of the penetration rate of CV technology in commercial vehicles on network-wide traffic mobility and safety. Finally, the study will make specific recommendations for the development of training programs that will better prepare commercial vehicle drivers for large scale CV technology deployment.
