Traffic congestion and vehicle emission are two critical social issues we are facing daily. It is believed that reduced traffic congestion leads to reduced car idling which leads to less carbon dioxide emissions. To improve freeway traffic mobility aims to mitigate traffic congestion, decrease journey travel time and reduce Greenhouse Gas emission. Increasing traffic congestions on freeway around the world call for innovative traffic control strategies and systems that can maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the existing transportation infrastructure. Therefore, there is a tremendous need to understand the effects of different control methods on freeway daily operation, and find the cost-effective solutions to improve the performance of existing transportation system. Further, this proposed research has the ability to help with Canada's CO2 reduction strategy through improving traffic mobility. The general freeway control methods include ramp metering control, variable speed limit control, and route guidance.
