Stantec Inc. (Stantec) is an Edmonton-based international company in the design and consulting industry. In
addition, Stantec is a major contributor to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) industry across North
America. The latest development in the ITS industry is Connected Vehicles (CV) technology, which facilitates
wireless communications between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure in a high-mobility
environment. Transport Canada, provincial and municipal agencies, as well as many private companies
envision CV technology as the future of the ITS industry. Recognizing this trend, Stantec is considering
incorporating CV technology in its planning of transportation infrastructure. After several discussions between
Stantec and the researchers at the University of Alberta (U of A), Stantec decided to partner with the U of A
ITS research team to investigate the future trend of CV technology in the context of pedestrian safety and
signal priority control and develop a prototype platform based on CV technology.
