This proposal requests funding in the amount of $54,960 to purchase a Sub-bottom Profiling System (SBPS) that will be used by scientists at the Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Laboratory (PEARL) in the Department of Biology at Queen's University, and the Environmental Variability and Extremes Laboratory (EVEX) in the Dept. of Geography. Sub-bottom profiling systems use acoustic waves to detect stratigraphic differences in sediments of varying characteristics that result from changes in acoustic impedance. Routine digital profiles of sedimentary structure can now be generated from small remote lakes due to advances that have made SBPS significantly smaller and lighter, without compromising resolution. Additionally, scientists specializing in small remote lakes can now also pursue projects that simply weren't possible with the older heavier SBPS. The PEARL and EVEX labs recognize the tremendous research opportunities that portable SBPS bring to our respective research. Additionally, training on the use of the SBPS will enhance the training of our graduates that will promote new discovery and will enhance their abilities in advanced geo-spatial techniques and analyses.
