This project will develop a model with multiple pulp values for determining the mass of chips through analysis of the shape and volume of wood chip piles. Using multiple compensation factors to convert volume to mass is by far a more accurate method than the current industry practice of applying a general compensation factor on a simple total volume measurement. The modeling of the chip pile will take into consideration compression factors from gravity, size of chips, mechanical loading from machinery, compression due to moisture mass, rates of decompression after loads are removed from the pile, and void space ratios in a pile of chips. Pulp mills are interested in acquiring a system which can accurately determine the masses of their chip inventory on demand without requiring expensive third party survey analysis of their chip piles.
