The objective of this research is to further the development of wastewater treatment technologies for the energy industry. The recent research partnership between McMaster and Kontek Ecology Systems focused on the treatment of wastewater from hydraulic fracturing (i.e., 'fracking'), a drilling process for extracting natural gas deposits from shale rock formations, and oil sands processing. There is a significant amount of public concern over the pollution risks associated with the quality and quantity of the wastewater that is produced via both processes. Filtration and adsorption technologies were evaluated over a wide range of conditions to identify the critical parameters that govern the separation performance.
