Due to the complexity of the manufacturing processes involved, the delivery of defect-free automotive parts is very challenging. This research project involves automating the inspection of an Ontario-made automotive part containing a complex pattern of holes. This metal part is made by forming and punching. Occasionally one of the hole punches fails causing parts to be formed missing holes. The part's surface is very oily and shiny making visual inspection difficult. Manual inspection is unreliable and has resulted in these defective parts being shipped. The manufacturer has identified the lack of reliable hole pattern inspection as a serious problem that is limiting their opportunity for increased sales.
