A reconfigurable architecture for continuous mobile sensing

In the area of mobile computing the emerging class of continuous monitoring applications has the potential to revolutionize everyday life. While the processing demands of these applications are modest most of the time, they require periodic collection of sensor readings. As a result, applications that perform continuous sensing may cause the devices battery to drain within several hours. To improve support for continuous sensing applications Huawei Canada will research the use of heterogeneous architectures that combine traditional processors with one or more low-power Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). In our approach, the initial filtering stages of the sensing application will be offloaded to the low-power FPGA. When the code running on the low power processor detects the occurrence of an event of interest, it proceeds to wake up the phone and passes control to the rest of the application. The research stage of this project will require the design and
