Canadian government has increased the focus on regulating discharge of waste water to the environment to avoid the eutrophication of the ecosystem. However with the new regulations many municipalities require substantial upgrades. Traditional waste water treatment technologies have become cost prohibitive. So Bishop Water Technologies (BWT) working on implementing an ecofriendly and cost-effective technology for treating Canadian waste water (municipal and industrial) and removal of nutrient loading in rivers and lakes. BWT technology is based on the "BioCord" (artificial support material for development of microbial biofilm). To market such technology requires stable operation of BioCord in different environmental conditions. Hence to improve and optimize this treatment technology BWT need to understand and validate the disparities in the microbial compositions under different operating environments and waste streams; To do this effectively will require a detailed genetic study of the biofilms which will allow the researchers to identify the proportion of ideal microbial species for optimization. The outcomes generated by this research will contribute to an improved understanding of this novel municipal waste treatment and provide potential treatment solutions for sustainable management practice for protection water resource into perpetuity.
