Traditional methods used to extract bitumen from Oil sands materials involve the use of hot water digestion producing a fluid fine tailing (FFT) waste consisting of water, sand, clays, residual bitumen and other petroleum byproducts. The petroleum by-products are considered a contaminant and are susceptible to further biodegradation through bacterial mediated metabolism (BMM) either naturally or accelerated using commercial biological treatment. Hence commercial biological treatments hold significant promise for improving the water quality in general in this technology sector. However limited knowledge pertaining to the role of good bacteria (facilitators) vs. bad bacteria (poisoners) governing these processes exists. Cypher
