Economic losses from storms continue to grow in Canada, and around the world. This is a trend that is of significant concern to the insurance industry. Aon Benfield Canada is Canada's largest reinsurance broker. One of the company's needs is to develop a model to account for the effects of thunderstorms (including tornadoes and downbursts) on the buildings. While physics-based models exist for hurricanes and large-scale synoptic storms, they have not been developed for thunderstorms. There are several technical issues which must be addressed in order to develop such models. The objective of this project is to address one of these, pertaining to wind loads on wood-frame, single-family dwellings (houses) and other low-rise buildings.
