英文摘要
Antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria are a major concern today, in the fields of animal, human and environmental health. This research program concerns with the development of multifunctional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) formulations with the specific aim of targeted destruction of antibiotic resistant pathogenic bacterial cells. The problems addressed are motivated and defined by requirements of the fundamental material science, chemistry and nanotechnology research and biomedical technology developments. The research also addresses the fundamental issues of nanomaterial bacterial cell interactions. Nanomaterials are powerful industrial materials and there has been rapid growth in nanotechnology research for use in chemical, biochemical, healthcare and other industries. However, environmental, food chain and human health exposures of the nanomaterials like CNTs are yet to be fully understood. In such an event the CNTs are most likely to interact first with environmental and GI bacterial cells and such an interaction warrants detailed investigation. The research aim is to perform fundamental and applied research and investigate carbon nanotube gastrointestinal bacterial cell interactions. This study will help understand the basic mechanisms of nanomaterial interactions with bacterial cells and will contribute to the advancement of fundamental knowledge of nanomaterial impacts on environmental, animal and human health. If successful, this research will result in CNT therapies to combat antibiotic resistance pathogenic bacterial cells. This research will provide several opportunities for training of highly qualified personal.
