Evolving Software Collaboratively

Software needs to continually evolve to meet changing user needs, business innovation and technological advances (e.g., cloud, mobile, multi-core, multi-touch). This research program investigates approaches for software teams to evolve software to meet these changing requirements. The goal is to support software developers to make accurate software changes quickly while improving the quality and usefulness of the software. Research projects will explore how software changes, how software can be designed to accommodate change, and how team-based development can be coordinated to efficiently and effectively manage change. Models, notations, tools and techniques will be developed and validated with field and case studies. Formal language processing and software analysis techniques will be used to support automated analysis and systematic change of large-scale software systems. The techniques will be applied in a number of application areas with a focus on software development tools that support team collaboration and creativity. The government of Canada estimates that there are over 30,000 Information and Communications Technology firms in Canada with over $140 billion in annual revenues. The results of this research program are intended to improve the competitiveness of Canadian software firms in delivering innovative, quality and usable software that readily evolves to meet emerging information processing advances and end-users requirements.
