Over the past 5 years we have developed two numerical codes for intense light matter interaction. Both codes are disruptive in the sense that they allow the investigation of areas of light matter interaction physics and chemistry that cannot be modelled by any other existing tools. The current research proposal builds on the development work done over the past 5 years. The numerical codes will be applied to the analysis of various areas of strong field laser physics, such as: micro- and nano-machining of dielectrics, single molecule imaging with x-ray free electron lasers, strongly coupled plasma dynamics and the physics of stars, attosecond science, and correlated dynamics in laser driven atoms and molecules. Due to our fortunate position of having new theoretical tools at our disposal, we expect that the proposed research will make a major impact. The main vision that underlies all the manifold sub-projects is the following. We would like to identify methods for spatially and temporally resolving ultrafast and ultrafine processes in nature. The fastest and finest mechanisms relevant to life on earth are electronic processes. They play an important role in all aspects of nature, such as for example in the making and breaking of molecular bonds and in the dynamics of solids and plasmas. The ultimate dream would be to make movies of these processes by spatially and temporally resolving their electronic dynamics.
