Electronic materials are at the heart of our today's society, where they are the critical underpinning in fields such as information technology and sustainable energy. Novel strategies to enhance the performance of electronic materials are in high demand for applications such as bright and efficient light sources and efficient solar cells. To make a significant progress in this direction, I will adopt an exciting strategy based on IONIC/ELECTRONIC COUPLING to enhance the charge carrier density in semiconductors. The coupling will be based on the use of electrolyte dielectrics (salt solutions, ionic liquids) in contact with the semiconductor incorporated in a transistor structure. A high charge density will be induced by electrostatic doping via an electrical double layer. In this Research Program, I will focus on photophysics and transport physics aspects of organic (molecules and polymers) and inorganic (metal oxides) semiconductors where high charge density will be achieved through the use of electrolyte dielectrics. Devices will be employed throughout the Program as tools to investigate fundamental materials properties. The students trained within this Research Program will benefit of its multidisciplinary nature and will acquire competences in materials processing, electrical/optical materials characterization, microscopy, and device physics. They will take advantage of this multidisciplinary training to successfully develop their careers in Canadian industry, academia, and government laboratories.
