The "Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick" is developing an applied research focused bio-refinery that will have production scale fermentation equipment manned by expert staff allowing university researchers and biorefinery and industrial fermentation companies to scale-up and validate their technologies prior to production roll-out or licensing. This commercialization and training center can play a key role in biorefinery and fermentation research and technology, product and process development in Atlantic Canada where the bioindustry is currently worth in excess of $60 million and employs over 2000 people. Regional universities, bioenergy research institutions and SMEs are using bacteria and yeast fermentation to produce innovative biobased products such as biofuels, enzymes and biorenewable chemicals. For these innovators, there exists a capacity gap between the laboratory scale and the full scale production required by stakeholders in the biorefinery innovation value chain. The facility fills that gap by providing the fermentation and product isolation and purification equipment required for biotechnology scale up. The equipment and research staff will be dedicated to developing and working on collaborative applied research projects with industry and university researchers. The facility will also house training facilities for college students, university graduates and industry staff interested in internships to develop and increase the commercial value of their own research. An additional benefit for the university researchers, beyond increasing the value of their technologies, will be the acquisition of practical industry skills not typically available to this academic group. Support for this initiative includes Canadian universities, the principal bioenergy institutions in the Atlantic Region and industry partners. New roles will be established for the College, including acting as a tech transfer and commercialization focal point for regional collaborations and becoming the premier source for biofermentation highly qualified personnel in Atlantic Canada.
