Modulation of synaptic transmission by GABA and metabotropic glutamate receptors

Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) and glutamate are major neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Sensory information from the periphery going through the spinal cord is filtered by a mechanism called presynaptic inhibition. In this proposal studies are designed to examine the involvement of certain GABA and glutamate receptors in modulation of transmission between central brain cells and in presynaptic inhibition. We are looking at novel strategies examining what happens to function when different receptors co-localize or form receptor complexes. These studies will further our understanding of mechanisms involved in processing of sensory information in the spinal cord and activity in brain pathways. They will help in developing comprehensive therapeutic strategies to treat pain, epilepsy, memory disorders, etc.
