英文摘要
The proposed research focuses on experimental and numerical study of aerodynamics of complex bluff bodies in ground proximity. Our inability to accurately predict aerodynamic drag and complex bluff body wakes is due to the fact that turbulent flow phenomena over complex bodies are not well understood. Therefore, the applicant is proposing a novel experimental research program to provide a comprehensive high quality data on the aerodynamics of complex bluff bodies such as pickup and trailer trucks. The proposed research will employ state-of-the-art measurement techniques to obtain high quality velocity, pressure and force data in full scale and small scale wind tunnels. Advanced data analysis techniques will then be employed to reveal the vortical structure and explore the dynamic roles of these structures in the drag production mechanism. The research will also apply computational fluid dynamics software and numerical models with varying sophistication to analyze these flows. The comprehensive high quality data, physical insight and refined numerical models will facilitate the development of cost effective drag reduction devices for existing road vehicles. In addition, it will facilitate the development of cost effective drag reduction strategies for vehicle design engineers to improve the aerodynamics of future vehicles. This will significantly improve fuel economy on vehicles with tremendous impact on the economy, environment and energy security. This research therefore has the promising potential to enhance Canada's competitiveness in the automotive industry. It also has the opportunity to nurture the next generation of engineers, researchers and the essential skills needed in Canada.
