The oxidation of steel in supercritical water (SCW) produces differently structured oxide films depending on the alloying elements present. Usually there is an outer layer of iron-rich oxide, under which chromium is enriched in an inner layer; below that there can be internal oxidation of chromium or other elements. By analogy with oxidation in gases at similar or higher temperatures, such surfaces may be vulnerable to mechanical degradation under the action of thermal cycling, as well as by the stress present in the component at operating temperature. Certain alloying elements were shown in earlier research to improve the integrity of SCW-oxidized surfaces. In the proposed project the focus will be the mechanics of the oxide under various relevant conditions of stress and environment.
