英文摘要
With the exponential growth in internet applications, more and more data centers (including servers, data storage, cloud storage, etc) have been built to process the ever-increasing network traffic. These data centers consume considerable amounts of electrical energy, about 1.5% of the total electricity generated in US. It is estimated by the US Environmental Protection Agency that the peak load of data centers in the US alone was 12 Giga Watt in 2011. Rectifiers are used to power the data centers, which consist of two stages. One is AC to DC converter with power factor correction that converts the input AC voltage (120V or 220V) into a 400V DC. The other is a DC to DC converter that converts the 400V into 12V which is fed into the mother board of the data center. It is also noted that depending on the customer usage, the power consumption of the data center varies significantly with network traffic. New technologies should be developed to ensure that the system operates at close to its peak efficiency level under all the load conditions. The objective of this research project is to develop new technologies for a high efficiency DC - DC converter that will meet Energy Star 80 PLUS Titanium standard for server rectifiers. With completion of this project, the Toronto design center of Murata Power Solutions will be able to design the most efficient data center power supply in the world and expand its sales volume in this market.
