Novel antibiotics for treatment of bovine mastitis / Nouveaux antibiotiques pour le traitement de la mammite bovine

Recently, our research led to the discovery of a new antibiotic target for bacteria. This new target is an RNA molecule with a regulatory function (a guanine riboswitch) apparently essential to certain bacteria causing infections in animals. We also identified a small drug-like molecule able to bind the guanine riboswitch and prevent expression of essential genes with subsequent bactericidal action. We further demonstrated the antibacterial activity of this compound in experimental therapies for Staphylococcus aureus intramammary infections (mastitis) in both mice and cows. With the help of Lilly Canada, Inc., and its animal health component (Elanco), the proposed R&D Project aims at optimizing the novel antibiotic for veterinary use in the dairy industry.
