Technology of telecommunication is always very close to Canada with the technological success of many Canadian companies like Nortel, JDS Uniphase, RIM, etc. It is very important to keep and develop cutting edge technologies that will provide advantages for Canadian Telecom companies. AEPONYX which is located in Montreal is a telecommunications equipment manufacturer of wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems, with products such as data center interconnect systems that uses many spectrometers or gratings. One of the main components needed in these networks is a multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX), that are used to combine or separate many wavelengths or channels. In order to decrease the fabrication cost of this component and make this solution widely available, a move to silicon photonics from the present silica on silicon planar lightwave circuits (PLC) is desired. In addition, it is also important to have highly efficient grating design for MUX/DEMUX configuration to minimise the losses. Hence, high grating efficiency is needed so that the devices can meet the requirements of WDM. The integrated concave diffraction grating (CDG) (also referred as echelle grating) that has been developed at Concordia University will be developed for designing highly efficient MUX/DEMUX. It is therefore proposed to carry out a feasibility study to adapt Concordia's patented technology of mono-order grating with high efficiency and small footprint silicon CDG for the requirements of AEPONYX components. AEPONYX will thus benefit from Concordia's unique knowledge and experience of mono-order diffraction grating that would equip them with advantages over other competitors. This technology will help AEPONYX to develop their products based on mono-order grating configurations.
