There is an increasing demand for precise control and performance optimization in the industrial printing industry worldwide. During the process of printing, industrial printers require using materials and consumables based on pigmented inks that generate significant pollution.This project aims to address these issues. The main objective is to develop a portable instrument that can be used to fully control the cleaning process of ink rollers and to optimize the use of solvents to what is precisely needed to clean a given ceramic roller. In this project we will optimize a dedicated instrument based on interferometry that can measure surfaces with height inhomogeneity with high axial resolution (1 µm). The probe is based on a monomode fiber on which a GRIN lens is attached for focussing over a long depth of view. Using a wide bandwith laser and a rotating prism to vary the interferometer reference arm length (delay line), the system is able to image upwards 10mm depth with micron resolution. The specific objectives are: 1) To develop an optical-to-electrical acquisition card with USB2 communication that can be used to acquire interferometry signals at up to 10Mhz and send data in real time to a portable computer. 2) To optimize the optical interferometer (including the delay line) design and packaging. 3) To develop a signal acquisition chain to increase signal to noise ratio and generate robust measures of depth. A direct outcome of this work will be the development of an improved instrument that is portable and ready for tests in the field.
