Isocyanates are important bulk and fine chemicals broadly used by the chemical industry. For examples, they are components of paints and coatings to create weather-resistant surfaces. They are also used to make building materials (for example, Styrofoam, flexible foams, adhesives, elastomers, and binders) and in the production of manufactured goods (for example, bedding, furniture, clothing, appliances, electronics, tires, and packaging). The global market for isocyanates is enormous - according to a study by Markets and Markets, "the isocyanate market is expected to grow with a healthy pace over the next five years to reach $38,729 million/year". From a volume and economic perspective, compounds with two isocyanates groups (di-isocyanates) are the most important. However, isocyanates are also valuable reagents used in advanced chemical manufacturing (for example as "building blocks" used to produce pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals). To date, all industrial applications of isocyanates relate to carbon-substituted isocyanates.
This proposal aims to combine the expertise of Beauchemin on a new family of isocyanates (nitrogen-substituted isocyanates) with the expertise of SiliCycle on solid-supported reagents. SiliCycle is an international pioneer in this market of immobilized reagents, which are used by the pharmaceutical industry to remove trace levels of toxic metals, genotoxic impurities, and other organic contaminents during production of pharmaceuticals. The advantage of solid-supported reagents is that a chemical reaction can occur with them, and removal of impurities can occur upon simple filtration of the solution. However, current solid-supported reagents have limitations, and performance is critical given the stringent requirements imposed by regulatory agencies such as the FDA and Health Canada. New immobilized reagents will be rapidly synthesized by reacting Beauchemin's N-substituted isocyanate precursors with SiliCycle supported resins. The new resins will
