Carbodiimides are important reagents to form amide bonds, which is a key functional group present in biologically active molecules. For example, the automated peptide synthesis that is now widely used in biomedical research (e.g. drug discovery) - and for which the Nobel prize was awarded to Merrifield in 1984 - relies on coupling agents such as carbodiimides to assemble peptides from simple amino acids. Other important biologically active molecules containing amides bonds, such as agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, are produced using carbodiimides. However, despite decades of innovation, coupling agents still face limitations in reactivity that require new reagents and protocols.
