Pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) or "puffers", dry powder inhalers (DPIs), and nebulizers are normally used in the treatment of lung diseases. Statistics from Lung Associations indicate that up to approximately 10% of the population may suffer from respiratory illnesses requiring treatment in part of their lives. Most of the aerosol characterization available in the literature consists in obtaining the final particle size distribution from cascade impactors. CoralTec Inc. (Toronto, ON) is investigating the possibility of expanding and adapting their D30 spray droplet sizer technology towards the measurement of pharmaceutical aerosols (medication droplets with diameters around 3.5 microns produced from inhalers) using a transitional approach by combining their device with traditional cascade impactors.
