Thrust and Emission Measurements of a Small Gas Turbine for Research Aerial Vehicles

Bombardier Inc. has been exploring the development of small-scale research aerial vehicles. In one of the configurations, turbojet engines are used for propulsion. The company wishes to perform on-ground thrust measurements of small gas turbines (500 N thrust), in addition to emission measurements (NOx, CO, CO2, HC, and particulate matter). An experimental setup will be designed, instrumented, and built for the purpose. The engine mounts (and frame) should be designed to mitigate any lateral motion. Care must be taken regarding a smooth inlet, a test section with a constant inlet pressure, engine mounts also allowing a proper thrust measurement, and an exhaust system providing cooling of the gases with ambient air. Ultimately, this initial research should lead to future collaborations to test these gas turbines using simulated-altitude test facilities in a possible collaboration with NRC.
