项目摘要

MMSI (McArthur Medical Sales Inc., Rockton, ON) developed an add-on adapter to connect the Respimatinhaler to commercially available masks that will facilitate the inhalation of ashtma medication by certainpatients, normally seniors and children, who may normally lack coordination between actuation and inhalation.The effect of introducing the adapter (and mask) on the inhalation performance (medication delivery to thelungs) will be investigated in-vitro (indirectly using idealized mouth-throat-trachea replicas) and comparedagainst the efficiency of the Respimat inhaler alone. Deposition numerical simulations usingReynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations or DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) for the single phaseflow and Lagrangian random walk eddy interaction models (EIMs) for the particulate phase will also beperformed and the results will be validated against the experimental data.
