The maple syrup industry is an old and cherished sector in Nova Scotia. However, yields have been in decline,
presenting a major challenge for commercial producers. Hutchinson Acres (a major syrup producer based in
Lake Paul, Nova Scotia) have invested a large amount of money into their 800 acres of sugar bushes, which are
struggling to produce sap yields that are comparable to yields being achieved in other parts of Canada and the
United States. They have collected considerable production, operational and environmental information over a
number of years. Through statistical models, the aim of the proposed research is to analyze this data to identify
ways to improve farm management and build an effective data monitoring system to study long term progress,
resulting in better yields and quality.
