Arcelor Mittal Dofasco is the largest producer of steel in Canada with an annual production of 4.2 million tons. Its major products are pipeline grades and automotive grades, both of which requires high quality slabs. One of the major problems AM Dofasco faces during continuous casting is re-oxidation of the liquid steel in the tundish, and resulting in the formation of oxide inclusions. The major harmful inclusions are Al2O3 and spinels which result in nozzle clogging. To prevent re-oxidation of the melt stream while transferring from ladle to tundish, the liquid metal is inert gas shrouded by injecting Ar gas just below the slide gate. Also, the liquid steel surface is covered with a layer of tundish slag to prevent any surface oxidation. However, more than the desired amount of Argon gas may get aspirated into the ladle shroud during inert gas shrouding. The
aspirated Argon bubbles produce recirculatory flows which on reaching the steel-slag interface displaces the top slag layer creating an exposed eye of steel. In the present study, the formation of slag 'eye', its harmful effects on re-oxidation, and inclusion formation in AM Dofasco's twin slab caster tundish will be analyzed. Mathematical modelling will be performed, and various practices will be evaluated and then will be complemented with plant trials. The use of clean steel will prolong working life of products, reduce the cost of maintenance, decrease impact on the environment, and improve the quality of steels for the Canadian manufacturing sector, all of which will generate economic benefit for Canada. Direct benefits will also include
the training of highly qualified personnel for subsequent employment within Canadian-based industrial organizations and improving competitiveness of a Canadian company both of which will boost Canadian excellence in science and technology.
