Wedge network (www.wedgenetworks.com) is a leading Canadian company located in Calgary, Alberta, specializing in information technology, in particular secure network design. The company is interested in extending its secure network to biomedical services. The rationale behind this initiative is that the company foresees point-of-care devices will be widely adopted because it can reduce healthcare costs. However, patients want to protect the privacy of their diagnostic data, and do not want any malicious users to access or steal private information. Wedge Networks Inc. is actively looking for developers of point-of-care devices to test the interface between the diagnostic device and the Wedge secure network. They learned that Dr. Chen at the University of Alberta (UofA) is building an impedance-based point-of-care sensor device. The proposed activities in this Engagement grant will focus on the design of the interface between the diagnostic device built by Dr. Chen's lab and the Wedge network to securely transfer patients' data. Both parties are fully aware that, if any new IP arises from this project, the IP belongs to Wedge Networks Inc. This Engage funding will allow UofA students to gain essential skills needed by the Canadian information technology industry.
