The advent of the Internet has revolutionized the way we shop. Gone are the days where one was limited by local availability and forced to travel long distances to procure goods: most products, no matter where they are produced, can now be bought from anywhere in the world. The only thing that still remains out of reach to online shoppers is the "try before you buy" experience: for example, how can one see how a pair of glasses would fit without physical access to the object? This proposal will develop a realistic "virtual try-on" system for glasses. Via the novel combination of existing technologies in face tracking, 3D modelling, and virtual compositing, the system will generate a real-time visualization of a person wearing virtual glasses. Mentum inc. (hereafter Mentum), the industrial partner in this proposal, is a leader in bringing technologies to independent optometry stores. A virtual try-on tool designed specifically for glasses will allow Mentum to meet the demands of its customers, expand its customer base, and strengthen its position as the market leader in software-based optometry solutions. The proposed technology will allow small, independent optometry stores throughout Canada to stay competitive on the global market
